So! Lets cut all the theory and head straight down to practical. I'll be explaining how to read tabs and play chords.
Firstly, a tab would look like this. The fattest and thickest string on your guitar is the 'E' string, and the thinnest string would be your 'e' string.

The numbers that are on the tab shows you what frets and what string to press. When pressing a note, always remember to press before the fret and as close to the fret board as possible.

For example, a 'C' chord would look like this on tabs:
e---------0----------
B--------1-----------
G--------0-----------
D--------2-----------
A--------3-----------
E--------X-----------
-> a '0' means you don't have to press anything but you've got to strum it
-> a '1' means you've got to press the first fret
-> a '2' means you've got to press the second fret
-> a '3' means you've got to press the third fret, so on and so forth.
-> a 'X' means don't strum the string
So when its all done, it should look something like this:

Here are some tabs for afew common chords.
'G' Chord
e--3--
B--0--
G--0--
D--0--
A--2--
E--3--
'Am' Chord
e--0--
B--1--

D--2--
A--0--
E--X--
'F' Chord

ALRIGHT! I hope that helps! Good Luck!
